Visiting Elounda is a little like walking into a postcard thanks to its idyllic golden beach and pretty streets. It is an ideal destination to book a honeymoon villa. The first thing you will want to do when you arrive in Elounda is to take a walk around the central town. Here you will find the picturesque harbour with everything from traditional fishing boats to rowing boats. The harbour also has a number of restaurants and tavernas overlooking the bay where you can stop off for a relaxing drink with a view. What more could you ask for on your romantic villa getaway.
Spend your days relaxing and sunbathing on the beach in Elounda or swimming in crystal clear waters. Explore the pretty streets and admire the stunning scenery on the coastal paths. The picturesque upper Elounda is a small village on top of the modern Elounda and the hamlet is better-known for hosting the set of the TV series ‘The Island’. Many of the houses used during the filming are still standing and can be seen from the outside. Elounda villa holidays offer a fantastic choice of beautiful beaches, fascinating archaeological sites and exciting day trips.
Just a short walk from the main town brings you to the causeway connecting Elounda to Spinalonga Peninsula. Here you will find the only remains of the submerged Sunken City of Olous. Olous was an ancient Greek city from the Minoan age and if you look carefully you can just about make out some of the ancient walls. There are also five huge stone windmills which stand next to the bridge. Perhaps take a 30 minute drive to the Minoan Palace of Malia where you can wander around the ancient ruins.
The family will love staying in a villa in Elounda, the main beach, just north of the harbour, is a 200 metre stretch of golden sand, perfect for the kids with its Blue Flag status. You can also walk to the nearby Driros Beach along the coastal path or take a short drive to the white pebble beach of Plaka, which comes with a promenade backed by tamarisk trees. As well as providing a fun transport option between Elounda and Plaka for the kids, the little blue tourist train also provides sightseeing tours to help you explore the Cretan countryside. There is plenty to explore from our family villas.
