Sun, sand and shallow waters… if you’re heading to Chania with kids, beach days are probably high on your list. The good news is, this part of Crete really delivers when it comes to family-friendly spots.

We’re talking calm, swimmable seas, soft sand for digging, and the kind of easy-going beach setups that make the whole day feel… well, easier. Because let’s be honest, a “relaxing” beach day with kids isn’t always as relaxing as it sounds.

These seven beaches strike that balance. Enough going on to keep everyone happy, but not so hectic that it becomes hard work.

Agii Apostoli

A bit of a hidden gem for families, Agii Apostoli is made up of a series of small coves, which means you’re never dealing with big waves or strong currents.

The water here is shallow and calm, ideal for younger children who just want to splash about without you hovering every second. There’s also a playground nearby, which is always a win when the sandcastle attention span starts to fade.

Add in a few cafés and easy access to ice cream, and you’ve got a beach that works for both kids and parents.

Marathi

Marathi is one of those beaches that just feels easy from the moment you arrive. The bay is naturally sheltered, so the water stays calm and shallow, making it perfect for paddling and swimming.

What really sets it apart though is the setting. You’ve got tavernas right along the beachfront, so long, lazy lunches are very much part of the plan here. No packing up early because everyone’s hungry, just a seamless move from beach to table and back again.

It’s a great option if you want a slower, more relaxed beach day without compromising on convenience.

Falassarna

If your family beach days involve a bit more space and movement, Falassarna is a brilliant choice. It’s one of the larger beaches in the area, with a wide sandy stretch that’s perfect for games, running around, or just spreading out without feeling on top of other people.

The water can be slightly livelier here compared to some of the more sheltered bays, but on calmer days it’s still very swimmable.

It’s the kind of beach where you can easily spend hours, especially if your kids like a bit of freedom to roam and play.

Elafonisi

This one feels a little bit special. Elafonisi is known for its soft pink-tinged sand and shallow lagoon, which almost looks like a giant natural paddling pool.

For families, it’s ideal. The water is warm, shallow, and easy to navigate, even for younger children. You can walk out quite far without it getting deep, which takes a lot of the stress out of keeping an eye on everyone.

It can get busy, especially in peak season, but if you time it right, it’s one of those places that really does live up to the hype.

Nea Chora

If you’re staying in or near Chania town, Nea Chora is probably the easiest beach option. No long drives, no complicated planning, just a simple, accessible stretch of sand with everything close by.

The sea is generally calm and shallow, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafés lining the beach, so you’re never far from food, drinks or a quick break from the sun.

It’s not the most secluded beach, but for convenience and a fuss-free day, it’s hard to beat.

Loutraki

Loutraki is one of those beaches that feels a bit more tucked away. Smaller, quieter, and with a more relaxed atmosphere, it’s ideal if you’re looking to escape the busier spots.

The bay is sheltered, the water is clear and calm, and there are areas of shade which can make a big difference on hotter days, especially with younger children.

It’s a great choice for a slower-paced beach day where you can properly switch off while the kids play safely nearby.

Kalathas

Kalathas is another solid all-rounder for families. It’s spacious, sandy, and has shallow water that’s perfect for paddling and swimming.

There’s plenty of room to spread out, which always helps avoid that cramped feeling you sometimes get on smaller beaches. It also tends to have a more relaxed vibe, making it a good option if you’re travelling with younger children and want something straightforward and stress-free.

Simple, easy, and does exactly what you need it to.

Why Chania Works So Well for Family Beach Days

What makes Chania stand out is how easy it all feels. You’re never too far from a great beach, and most of them come with the practical extras that make a difference… places to eat, facilities nearby, and water that’s actually suitable for kids.

It’s not about picture-perfect, untouched beaches where you’re struggling for shade or snacks. It’s about real, usable spaces where families can relax, play, and enjoy the day without it turning into a logistical challenge.

From shallow lagoons to wide sandy stretches, these beaches tick all the boxes for a fun, low-stress family day out. And when that’s the goal, Chania makes it feel surprisingly easy. ☀️
