Pisa is one of the most exciting cities in Tuscany, a jumble of Romanesque buildings, grand Gothic churches, gleaming piazzas and fantastic art galleries, winding its way along the Arno river. The world knows Pisa for a certain learning tower, tilting since its completion in 1372 and a world-famous attraction, but there's so much more to this fabulous city near the Tuscan coast. Home of an elite university, its streets are pepped with cafes, bars and there is an impressive portfolio of Romanesque, Renaissance and Gothic buildings. From Pisa, it's just a short drive to the sparkling Tuscan coastline and the Tuscan valleys hiding olive groves, forests and wineries.

Things to do in Pisa

Staying in our Pisa villas, guests will get to experience city, sea and countryside, a rare combination in Tuscany. Our villas in Pisa are all within reach of all three of these attractions, with the coast 15-minutes away from the beach and within a stone's throw of the city. Start your journey in Pisa at the world-famous Piazza dei Miracoli, home of the iconic Leaning Tower – a 56m white-marble structure which has been leaning since its completion in 1372. The tower is actually the bell tower for the marble cathedral that sits next door, another gorgeous site in this iconic Pisa piazza. Pisa is a lived-in local city and thriving university town, and wandering its streets you'll find plenty to do, like stopping for a coffee (or spritz) in café-lined squares, exploring galleries like the Palazzo Blu and shopping on the buzzing Corso Italia and the more up-market Borgo Stretto. The beaches near Pisa are also pretty fantastic, with sprawling sandy Viareggio just 15-minutes away and more exclusive Forte dei Marmi just a 30-minute journey from our villas in Pisa. Both are easily reached by a cheap and speedy train, which are easily accessible throughout Italy.

Our villas in Pisa are located near the city itself and also in the lush surrounding countryside, most coming with a private pool.

History and Culture in Pisa

From the grand buildings of the Piazza dei Miracoli to the myriad of museums and galleries in the cobbled streets of the old town, Pisa is steeped in history, and there are plenty of historical and cultural sites to see on your Pisa villa holiday. Of course, there’s the Leaning Tower, standing crooked in the Piazza dei Miracoli flanked the grand Romanesque Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the free-standing Baptistry – which took over 200 years to complete. The Piazza dei Miracoli is also home to one of the most well-curated museums in Tuscany, the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, housing treasures like tapestries, priceless paintings, sculptures and rich embroideries. Elsewhere in the city, the National Museum of San Matteo with its ecclesiastical collections and the Palazzo Blue – Pisa’s most renowned art gallery.

Family holidays in Pisa

Pisa is the perfect place for a family villa holiday, offering culture and cosmopolitan vibes for the adults, and plenty of fun-filled attractions for the kids. For a great family day out, head outside of the city to the Piccolo Mondo amusement park – a  waterpark with slides and pools and an absolute must for families travelling with children. Alternatively, the dazzling Tuscan coast is just a short drive or train journey away, the most family-friendly beach being Blue Flag Viareggio with its sprawling white sands, facilities, sunbeds and umbrellas. Families will love our villas in Pisa with a private pool, allowing for relaxation, privacy and the chance for the little ones to scream and splash around as much as they please.

Leave the historic streets of the city behind and head to the coast for a myriad of watersports, with many operators in the nearby beaches offering sailing and scuba diving lessons. Inland, Pisa villa guests can hike and mountain bike in the rugged countryside that surrounds the city. For a fantastic day out, head south for the famous Tarpons Wake Park in Pontedera – around 30km away – a famous kitesurfing school and activity centre in the region built around a big lake.

Romance in Pisa

Being Tuscan, Pisa oozes romance, from its gothic churches and renaissance squares to its gleaming palazzos hiding sultry wine bars and romantic restaurants. Take a walk along the Arno river where you'll spot the tiny Santa Maria della Spina church, before heading to the Piazza della Berlina for a glass of local Tuscan wine. Pisa's many art galleries also make for a romantic day out, filled with renaissance and Italian masterpieces and sure to stir your soul. When it comes to a date night in Pisa, there's plenty of options to choose from, and the best eateries can be found in the historic centre and the San Martino and Sant'Antonio neighbourhoods.
