The harbour city of Zakynthos Town is the pulsing capital and main port of the island. It is located at the base of the hill of Bochali between steep wooded slopes that are topped by the ruins of a Venetian fortress. The fortress was famous for its glorious ensemble of Italianate architecture which stood until the earthquake of 1953 that destroyed most of the city. The subsequent reconstruction works began and now Zakynthos Town resembles a stylish modern city, with arcaded streets and gracious neoclassical public buildings. The vibrant main town area is centred around the magnificent waterfront and dazzling Solomos Square and is a hive of activity.

Zakynthos Town offers a whole host of interesting sights. Visit Solomos Square which is surrounded by characteristic traditional buildings with arch-shaped windows and arcades, typical architectural features of the island. Solomos Museum has the impressive Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos tombs and along with the Cultural Centre for the Municipal Library are all worth a visit. The post byzantine Museum of Zante exhibits treasures such as statues trimmed with gold, icons and art woodcuts. Beside the magnificent church of the patron-saint Agios Dionysios, is the Ecclesiastical Museum of Zante. See the Romas Mansion, one of the few buildings that was not destroyed by the earthquake. Head up to the top of the hill of Strani, located at the back of the city, to view the Venetian Castle situated on a hill overhanging the town.

The tourist train of Zante Town is the best way to see the town whilst enjoying a fun and relaxed ride, a firm favourite with the kids. There are plenty of shopping opportunities, head to Roma which is by far the most commercial street in town, with shops selling clothes, shoes, accessories, jewellery, local traditional products and gifts. Boat trips are also really popular with families, where you can sail around the amazing rugged coastline and caves, with the additional bonus of perhaps spotting the endangered sea turtles in their natural habitat. A Greek villa in Zakynthos Town really does provide the perfect location for exploration.
Zakynthos Town provides plenty of activities if you are looking for a bit more adventure. Hire a bicycle or motorbike and get out and about on your own. Head off into the sun on a jeep safari or book a fabulous boat trip and see the island from a different angle. You could try scuba diving and see the underwater world with your own eyes or just have fun at the beach where there is a wide range of water sports available.
