A trip up the hill to the Venetian fortress, offers you stunning views of the town and the sea below. Seek out the orthodox chapel nestled amongst ancient pine trees and visit the old mosque. Wander through the narrow streets and alleyways with arched doorways and stone staircases giving you a real tangled taste of all types of local heritage. Rethymno’s harbour, with its old castle and sea wall at its perimeter, has an old and new feel to it.
Head out west and you will find remnants of an old waterfront fort and Moorish architecture. A half hour drive gets you to the Sacred Monastery of Arkadi, once the scene of a bloody Turkish siege. This holy place is now a peaceful oasis of golden stone buildings and flower filled courtyard.
Swimming is a favourite pastime here, and is the best way to cool off from the warm sunshine. There are all manner of water sports available to try, including jet skiing and paragliding, ideal for fun filled days. Rethymno is perfect for those who like to get out and about. Take a hike in the unspoiled countryside, walk through olive groves and citrus trees, and along streams which used to power the now deserted watermills.
