Originally an island, Rovinj is a popular seaside resort overlooking a small pebble bay and harbour where you can watch the fishermen bring in the catch of the day. The cobbled streets wind tightly around crowded houses, galleries, cafes and restaurants serving fresh seafood and Istrian delights. The walk will lead up to the magnificent old bell tower within the church of St Euphemia, climb up inside to admire views over the town and bay. Rovinj is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful towns in Istria and Croatia.

History and culture in Rovinj
Surprisingly Rovinj was once an island, but the narrow channel between it and the mainland has gradually silted up in the last 250 years. This beautiful town dates to prehistoric times and was originally an Illyrian settlement populated by the Histri tribe. It became part of the Roman Empire in 177BC and was called Ruginium in Latin. It fell to Venice in 1283 and because of repeated attacks fortified its walls. It was then ruled by the Austro-Hunagrian Empire, Italy and Yugoslavia before Croatia declared its independence 1991.
