UNESCO-protected Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and the largest city in Dalmatia. It is a vibrant and bustling port city with a fantastic location between the mountains and the sea. This historic city is the economic and cultural centre of the Dalmatian coast, and islanders flock here to work. It is not all about city life though, there is also the glorious beach and seaside promenade, roman ruins and medieval churches, shady walks and narrow winding streets.

You can never get bored in the historic city of Split as there is so much to see and do. One of the biggest attractions is the UNESCO-protected Diocletian's Palace, which is more like a walled town with stylish boutiques and bars. This is a great place to explore, and just outside to the west lies the Velo Varos neighbourhood. Built between the 14th and 17th century, the narrow winding streets are lined with traditional stone buildings, churches and pleasant local bars. If you continue up past Velo Varos you will get to Marjan Hill with its incredible sweeping views. And not forgetting Riva, the city's seafront promenade which is ideal for a spot of people watching. Our villas for groups of friends in Split are perfectly positioned to explore the city and its surroundings.
Byzantines, Croatian Kings, the Venetians, Austrians and Italians have all laid their claim to Split, but it was the Romans who put the city on the map. When Emperor Diocletian decided to build his retirement palace here in the 4th century, he created a vast walled palace which exuded the grandeur and stature of the empire. The centre of Split was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and fortunately it did not suffer much damage during the war that broke out in 1991. Split is often thought to be one of the centres of Croatian culture, with many ties to art and popular music coming from the city.
