This small town has a long and fascinating history. In the very beginning it was known as Capocesto, a small island that consisted of a hill with a small church on it, the Church of St George. This island was used as a sanctuary from Turkish invaders, but as attacks became more frequent the local population inhabited the island for good.
The Turkish built a bridge to connect it to the mainland, and that is where it gets its current name from the Croatian verb primostiti, meaning to bridge. When the Turks went, the bridge did too, but the island was still connected to the mainland by silted up ground. The French, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Italy and the Republic of Yugoslavia have all ruled here until Croatian was made independent in 1991.
