History and culture in Makarska
Originally an Illyrian settlement, which has grown around a natural harbour, Makarska has a turbulent and fascinating history. The Romans, Slavs and Venetians have all lay claim to the town at one point, but it was the Turks who built a fortress here in 1568 to keep the Venetians out. The Venetian's took back control from 1646 to 1797, and since then the French, Austrians, Italians and the Republic of Yugoslavia have ruled. During the 60s and 70s, Makarska proved popular with visitors from all around the world. Since Croatia became independent in 1991 it has regained its reputation and is a much-loved resort once again.
