Discover the fascinating history of Can Picafort with a trip to the Necropolis de Son Real, a prehistoric burial ground that was used from the Iron Age until Roman times. There are around 110 underground tombs excavated into the rock making the Necropolis de Son Real one of the most important funeral sites in Mallorca. With graves dating back to the 7th Century, it is a fascinating sight. If you are feeling really energetic, you can swim out to S'illot Des Porros which also has its own ancient cemetery. There are other fine examples of the island's medieval heritage to be found at the farmsteads of Son Real and la Alquiería, and the Rectory and Parish Church in Santa Margalida which was built during the 16th Century on the site of the original 13th Century Church. Tours take you through a maze of smaller chambers and amazing caverns which eventually leads to the crystal-clear water of the Lago de Martel, one of the largest underground lakes in the world. Come the evening there are several late-night bars in the Can Picafort area but for a livelier night out you can always head to the neighbouring towns of Playa de Muro or Alcudia.
