Omis was once home to the most fearsome pirates in the Adriatic, who would attack ships from the river mouth before quickly retreating. Because of its fascinating history, the town’s coastline is peppered with forts and monuments, like the 13th-century fortress of Mirabella and the Starigrad Fortress – situated on a peak above the town and definitely worth the one-hour hike.

Wander the historic old town to see the church of Saint Michael, dating back to the 17th Century and a mix of Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic architecture and to also see the Church of Saint Peter. Thanks to its fantastic location on a canyon, river mouth and coastline, Omis is an adventurous traveller’s dream, with ample opportunities for watersports and adrenaline-filled activities. Enjoy a rafting tour from the town which takes around four hours, or head to the Cetina canyon for canyoning – where you’ll scramble, climb, jump, swim and abseil.

Not for the faint-hearted, there’s also a zip wire right over the Cetina river canyon which brave passengers can take on. The mountains surrounding Omis are also some of the tallest in Croatia, so remember to pack your hiking boots when packing for an Omis villa holiday. It’s also possible to paraglide from the mountains, offering cinematic views of the Adriatic coast. For watersports, head to the town’s main beach where you can hire equipment for diving, snorkelling and sea canoeing.
