Dubrovnik has an incredible history as an important maritime city. It was the capital of the Republic of Ragusa and became known for its wealth and diplomacy. It has experienced a tumultuous existence suffering invasion by Venice and from Napoleon Bonaparte. This troubled past continued into World War II, when Dubrovnik became part of the Independent State of Croatia - occupied first by the Italians and then the Germans. Following the war, communist leadership continued, resulting in the city becoming part of the Socialist Republic of Croatia and Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The countries declared their independence in the early nineties, although this resulted in much conflict in and around the city. 56% of Dubrovnik’s buildings were damaged by artillery attacks.
