Venture out from your private villa with poolin Halikounas, and, a few kilometres inland in the hills above Halikounas Beach, set amongst dense forest, is the small market town of Agios Matheos. It remains one of Corfu's largest and most traditional and picturesque towns. The majority of locals here are farmers, and the village is particularly renowned for its main street lined with cafes, bars and shops.
The unspoilt Korission Lake, Corfu’s largest lagoon, is part of a nature reserve popular with nature lovers and birdwatchers. The wetlands habitat is a haven for birds with over 100 species present, , including great white egrets, oystercatchers and curlews, viewed best from the eastern shoreline. The surrounding forests are home to lilies and some rare orchids too.The lake is 5km long and 1km wide, a haven for a variety of birdlife. Well away from the main tourist beaches there’s just a couple of tavernas, around which you’ll find the organised sections with sunbeds and umbrellas to hire. The rest of this massive beach is left open, so you can simply lay out a towel and enjoy the peace and quiet. The beach remains pristine and very safe for swimming as the waters are shallow for some distance, yet, even in the peak summer season this beach remains relatively uncrowded.
Visit the 13th Century Byzantine fortress of Gardiki, the only surviving medieval fortress on the southern part of Corfu, which defended the island. Built by Michael, the despot of Epirus, the ruins still show the fortress walls, which form an octagon with eight towers decorated with rows of tiles, standing and in one tower there are signs of a chapel.
Nearby Gardiki cave was inhabited in about 20,000 BC by Paleolithic man, great if you are looking for a day out from your private villa.
Issos is a long, beautiful, sandy beach with crystal clear waters, here you can hire water sport beach gear to keep you busy and cool during the hot sunny days. With strong winds it is a popular spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing, there are bars and tavernas nearby so you can relax and take a break every now and then.
The beach has sand dunes dividing the shore from the wetlands and a forest surrounding Korission Lake, great if you are looking for long walks with a relaxing atmosphere.
