Like all of Croatia, Porec has a long and fascinating history. It dates to prehistoric times and was called Picugi when it was home to the Illyrian tribe called Histri around 800BC. In 129BC the Roman's captured the town, but since then it has passed through the hands of the Venetian Empire, the Austrian Empire and Italy. It suffered badly in World War II when 75% of the houses in the town were destroyed. It went to Yugoslavia in 1947 until Croatia declared itself independent in 1991.
