There’s a huge variety of restaurants offering international as well as regional specialties, and the supermarket Apolonia is the one stop shop for culinary delicacies from all over the world. The markets in Loulé and Quarteira are the best places to buy fresh fish and seafood. Each Saturday farmers from the area offer their regional produce, perhaps test your own culinary skills and conjure a romantic meal in your couples private villa kitchen. Almancil owes its position on the tourist trail mainly to the two very exclusive resorts located within 10km of the town. Both Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo are well-established developments which offer luxury accommodation, amazing food and excellent golf facilities and have long been the holiday destination for the rich and famous. The influence of their proximity is notable in the quality of restaurants and stylish stores which adorn this seemingly simple market town making it an amazing destination to enjoy Algarve villa holidays.
The neighbouring village of São Lourenço boasts a church with an interior design that is breathtaking. Decorated with characteristic blue tiles telling the life story of its patron saint, this example of azulejo work being particularly notable because of its age, it dates back to 1730. A stone’s throw from the church is the local centro cultural, which for many years has hosted a range of art exhibitions and musical performances. The local pottery is also widely renowned, perhaps choose something bright and colourful to take home, a reminder of your fabulous Algarve holiday. Along the lagoon of the Ria Formosa long trekking trails beckon you to walk, to observe the various bird species and to explore the traditional sea salt harvesting in this unique protected landscape. There are also other activities available including a go-kart track, inaugurated in 1992, by Ayrton Senna, who had a holiday home in the area and the popular water park ‘AquaShow’ between Almancil and Quarteira, the largest of its kind in the whole of Portugal.
The area around Almancil and the neighbouring city of Quarteira is a paradise for golf lovers, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura have 13 great golf courses between them, several of them have already been venues for international tournaments in the past. On windy days the sea is dotted with surfers riding the waves to shore, perhaps you can test your own suffering skills or try out some of the many water sport activities available when you book a villa holiday in Almancil
