A small municipality located in Dubrovnik, Konavle is a beautiful part of Croatia separated by the sea by a series of verdant hills. It stretches from Cavtat to the Montenegrin border and has not changed for centuries. History and culture in Konavle

Like all of Croatia, Konavle has a fascinating history which dates to prehistoric and neolithic times. It was populated by the Illyrian tribes of the Plereians and the Ardians, and it has since been ruled by many of the powerful empires in Europe including the Romans and Croats. With the fall of the Dubrovnik Republic in 1807, Konavle found itself under the French and then the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy, before being part of the Yugoslavian Kingdom in 1918. After World War II, Konavle was a part of socialist Yugoslavia within the Socialist Republic of Croatia. Today, after the Homeland War from 1991 to 1995, it is part of the Republic of Croatia.
