'Italian Manchester', the 'City of Lovers', the ancient city of Terni has been given many names, thanks to its enchanting setting in the middle of the Umbrian countryside and fascinating industrial history. The city of Terni lies in the south of Umbria near the banks of the Nera river and is a lovely mix of modern and old-world architecture. Choose a villa in Terni to be close to a thriving city with great museums, restaurants, shops and bars, but to also be surrounded by carpets of olive groves, cypress trees and vineyards. Our villas in Terni can be found in the city itself and in the lush outskirts, just a few kilometres from the Marmore Waterfalls – considered the most beautiful waterfall in Europe – and the serene Lake Piediluco. Our villas in Terni are ideal for nature and outdoors lovers, and the gateway to some of the most beautiful sights in Umbria like the famous falls and Black River Park.

Things to do in Terni

Head into town to explore the Terni cathedral, peaceful public gardens and Basilica San Valentina – housing the tomb of St Valentine. If you're after a culture fix, then don't miss the Roman amphitheatre and the Palazzo Spada, once the home of a noble family and now the town hall. A villa holiday in Terni is also all about exploring the breath-taking natural sights nearby, not only the Marmore Waterfalls but the entire Black River Park with its opportunities for hiking and cycling. One of the most famous ancient archaeological sites in the whole of Italy is also near your Terni villa. Visiting in May? Don't miss the famous Cantamaggio festival, marking the return of spring with exhibitions, performances and general merriment.

Family holidays in Terni

For a great family day out when staying in a villa in Terni, hire a car and head to the gorgeous countryside, home of national parks and waterfalls. The whole family will love the luscious and cinematic Black River Park (or Parco Fluviale del Nera), offering some great hiking trails, wildlife walks and opportunities for bike rides. The park is also home to the famous Cascata delle Marmore, a 165-metre-high waterfall which immense crashes echo around the park. Family trips into Terni itself will also be made better with a visit to the delightful La Passeggiata public garden, a great place to seek solace after a day of sightseeing with tall trees and lawns ideal for picnicking. Adventurous activities in Terni

It's easy to make your villa holiday in Terni an adventure-packed one, thanks to the city being the gateway to some of the most famous and beautiful natural parks and wonders in Umbria. Make a day of it and head east of the city to the Black River Park, a protected area of 2,200 hectares where you can hike, cycle, trek and find adventure amongst the waterfalls and trees. From here you can also easily access the Lago di Piediluco, a picturesque natural lake fed by the Nera and Velino rivers. Guests staying in one of our couple's villas will appreciate the private pool, offering a secluded space to relax and unwind and some great views over the Umbrian countryside. Terni is known as the 'City of Lovers', thanks to its patron saint being the ill-fated St Valentine, with the saint being born and becoming bishop of the town.
