Lanzarote is an island steeped in history. It has been an island for 180 million years, which is roughly one hundred million years before dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Formed from volcanic rock, the geology remains volatile underfoot today. However, the last eruptions were in an explosive period between 1730 and 1736, during which the landscapes of the Timanfaya were formed. Today, Timanfaya is an arid landscape, dominated by the volcanoes formed in the 18th century. It is an unmissable day trip to see Lanzarote’s volcano heritage and calm landscape borne out of the flames and boiling lava. Overlooking the beautiful, eclectic resort town of Playa Blanca, the Castillo offers great views across the strait to Fuerteventura. There is a small watch tower here, used to defend the island from attacks from pirates in the 18th Century.

Playa Blanca, located right on the southern tip is another family favourite, as it has golden sandy beaches that are spread out across a flat terrain, with plenty of family activities.
