There are many fantastic historical and cultural sites in the Dalaman region, thanks to a fascinating history shaped by Romans, Greeks, Byzantines and Ottomans. You can visit all of these sites from your Dalaman villa, including the ancient city of Kounos which, according to mythology, was founded by the grandson of the Greek god Apollo. Kounos is a wonderful day trip with sights like an amphitheatre, Roman baths, marketplace and temple of Apollo and Agora. At the end of the Dalaman peninsula, travellers will find the ancient Carian city of Knidos which was built for the goddess Aphrodite and has a fantastic display of statues.
Other world-class historical sites in Dalaman include the Lycian rock temples – tombs carved into the side of limestone cliffs – and the splendid Marmaris Castle.
