Things to do in Brac

There are so many things to do and see in and around Brac. If you want to visit Croatia's other islands, ferries are available regularly too. The largest town on the island is Supetar with its charming medieval streets lined with friendly cafes, bars and shops. On the southern coast of Brac lies the secluded harbour town of Bol which is famous for Zlatni Rat Beach (Golden Beach). Explore the Dominican Monastery and the twisting cobbled streets. There's also Skrip with its medieval walls, stunning Milna with its elegant harbour, and handsome Pucisca known for its gleaming white Renaissance buildings, all of which are easily accessible from your private villa holiday in Brac.

History and culture in Brac

There is evidence that this beautiful island has been inhabited since the Bronze and Iron Ages. It has had a few names in its past, including 'Brentos' (meaning stag) by the Illyrians, and 'Elaphusa' by the Greeks. Much like the rest of Dalmatia it soon became part of the Roman empire. It has been occupied by the Austrian, Italy and Yugoslavia until Croatia declared its independence in 1991.

Brac has grown olives since Venetian times and you will find rare Buhavoca olives here. In 1655 the Venetian state insisted that the island be carpeted with olive trees, and fines were imposed on anyone who damaged the trees. As well as olives, it is famous for its white stone which has been exported across Europe and North America since Roman times. The White House in Washington DC is made of Brac stone, as well as Berlin's once mighty Reichstag and Liverpool's Catholic Cathedral.
