History and Culture in Mykonos

Mykonos owes its name to the son of the King of Delos, Mykons. According to mythology, Hercules, in one of his twelve tasks, was fighting the Giants. Having slain them, he threw them in the sea where they turned into huge rocks, forming the island of Mykonos.

Visit the archaeological museum of Mykonos which includes findings from excavations on the island and the surrounding small islets, such as small statues, ceramic vases, and jewellery.

The Castle of Gyzi is located on a hill above Ano Mera, in the island of Mykonos. Although it stands in ruins today, its location offers a gorgeous view of the island. The Monastery of Paleokastro is located on a hill above Ano Mera. Constructed in the 18th Century, this monastery still works as a nunnery. The island is littered with churches, museums and archaeological sites just waiting to be explored.

Family holidays Mykonos

Mykonos has something for everyone. It is famed for its vibrant nightlife, but also very suitable for families too. The kids will love it here, using your family villa as an ideal base. This 33 square mile island is home to beautiful beaches, stunning blue-green waters and white-washed villages.

If you want to stay close to the main town of the island, choose from our range of family villas in the beach resorts of Ornos or Agios Stefanos. Located in the southern part of the island, these long-stretching sandy beaches are well protected from the northern winds, making them a paradise for families.  There are plenty of family activities, such as visiting the many beautiful calm beaches, open-air cinemas, family friendly restaurants and of course relaxing in the beautiful weather.
