Grottaglie is one of Puglia's hidden gems, a charming town in the Taranto region set against low cave-ridden hills and limestone ravines. A Grottaglie villa holiday in Italy gives guests what they truly want, the chance to relax, switch off and do as little or as much as they like. Our villas are set in the rugged hills that surround the small town, offering a stunning rural setting with plenty of privacy. Grottaglie is the centre of ceramic pot making and the town is bursting with colourful Mediterranean ceramics and tiles, in its quaint craft ships but also its buildings and squares. Villa guests will find a handful of galleries, some palaces and churches, winding stone streets and lovely family-run trattorias. Explore the monastic complex on the edge of the town, visit the nearby coastal city of Taranto or simply relax in your Grottaglie and soak up the glowing southern Italian sun.

Things to do in Grottaglie

From our villas in Grottaglie, it's easy to stroll into town for a day of pottery shopping, exploring and general meandering, and there's a distinctly 'frozen-in-time' feel when wandering the old town's narrow streets. The Palazzo de Felice has a nice art gallery and there's a fascinating museum dedicated to the town's ceramic history in the Castello Episcopio. It's easy to dine out in Grottaglie, too, as there are some divine quintessentially Italian osterias and trattorias serving up nonnas' recipes and sublime local wines made using Primitivo, Negroamaro, Fiano and other varietals.

From your Grottaglie villas, you can also venture further afield to explore the stunning rugged countryside, housing treasures like the nearby national park and Terra delle Gravine. Our villas in Grottaglie are also just a 25-minute drive to the bustling city of Taranto and its plethora of local beaches.

History and Culture in Grottaglie

The most famous historical site in Grottaglie is the sprawling 15th-century monastic complex that lies at the edge of the town, dedicated to San Francesco di Paola and with lovely arcades and cloisters decorated with frescoes. Other sights include the Casa Vestita museum set in a historic manor house with classical ruins and the massive Castello Episcopio, a 13th-century castle where the archbishop once lived. All the top historical and cultural sights are a stone's throw from our villas in Grottaglie. Visit in July and you may get to attend the Musica Mundi, an international festival of ethnic music, and there are a handful of Mediterranean ceramics contests, theatrical and music events held in Grottaglie throughout the year.

Family holidays in Grottaglie

From our Grottaglie villas, it's easy to jump in a car and head west to the beaches of Taranto, long, golden sands with warm and shallow water for swimming and paddling. A great beach near Taranto is Lido Bruno, surrounded by Mediterranean shrub and lapped by the clear waters of the Ionian Sea. Lido Azzurro is also great for families with softs sands and facilities like umbrellas and sunbeds to hire. Combine a family day out in Taranto with a visit to the Jonian Dolphin Conservation, a research centre that also offers exhilarating dolphin and whale watching tours.

Our family villas in Grottaglie all have private pools, perfect for enjoying a relaxing day at home, and in Grottaglie you'll find plenty of delicious family-friendly Italian eateries. The kids will love gorging in pizza, pasta and creamy gelato.

Adventurous activities in Gottaglie

Remember to pack your walking shoes for a villa holiday in Grottaglie, as the town is just a stone's throw away from the beautiful Terra delle Gravine national park, the third-largest national park in Puglia. Trek through beautiful olive, black and southern ash and fragno trees and explore the park's famous ravines, formed over 125,000 years ago and home to animals like hares, foxes, wild boars, yellow-bellied toads and a host of slippery snakes. Watersports lovers will also love how close our Grottaglie villas are to the coast and the sands of Taranto, where there are plenty of operators offering activities like sailing and diving excursions and courses. Grottaglie's setting within ravines and hills also means there are plenty of natural caves in the area, which make for a great day out exploring.

Romance in Grottaglie

When staying in one of our Grottaglie couple's villas, it's hard for your holiday to not be a romantic one, thanks to the stunning rugged setting and proximity to the sparkling coast. For a romantic day in Grottaglie, head into the old town to explore the charming and peaceful streets, before dipping into a hidden wine bar for a spritz or glass of rich Pugliese red – L'Arco has a fantastic local wine list with delicious aperitivo. Perhaps take some time to wander the grounds of the beautiful Casa Vestita with its gardens and classical ruins, or head to nearby Taranto for a day at the beach or romantic evening in one of the twinkling harbourside restaurants. Combine with a sunset sailing boat cruise in search of the area's local striped dolphins.
